Choosing Bookkeeping Software for Your Business

Choosing bookkeeping software for small businesses is one of those sticky decisions. It’s not impossible to switch later, but it’s rarely easy — so it’s worth getting right from the start.
As an accountant to Stockport's small businesses I work with most major platforms, including Xero, FreeAgent, QuickBooks, and Sage. So whatever system you’re already using, I can support you.
Still, if you’re about to choose new software, then my top recommendation is 🥁... Xero.

Why Xero is my preferred bookkeeping software
If you were in business during the late-1990's - early 2,000's - you'll probably know that Sage was the market leader. It simply did the best job for most businesses. As cloud bookkeeping came on the scene Xero gradually earned its place as the current market leader - it's the best tool for the job at the moment.
As market leader it's most likely to integrate with other apps (if you add them as you grow) and offers plans to suit all business sizes.
Simple — for non-VAT registered sole-traders or lone-landlords. Offered at under £10 per month. Available through your accountant — so please ask if you're interested.
Ignite — For small start-ups, even if you are VAT registered (but limits the number of invoices you can issue)
Grow — Their most popular plan for VAT-registered, expanding businesses
Comprehensive & Ultimate — designed for larger companies or those needing advanced features (like multi-currencies and project tracking).

A Free Alternative
Mettle (by NatWest) offer a combined free bank account + bookkeeping software for small businesses. This combo won’t suit every business, but for very small sole traders, single-director companies and lone-landlords that don't process too many transactions, it's a worthy contender.
Cost conscious and starting out small? I'm more than happy to discuss if this will suit your needs. For more on Mettle, see my article on choosing your business bank account 💳.

Final Thoughts
The “best” bookkeeping software depends on your business size, complexity, and future plans.
For most small businesses, Xero is my first choice — flexible, affordable, and easy to use. But in some cases, a free alternative like Mettle may be enough.
